Grantley Adams School 'barn' gutted by fire
19 March 2006
A quick response from members of the Barbados Fire Service could not prevent fire from gutting one of the buildings on the Grantley Adams Memorial School compound yesterday afternoon.

Speaking to the Barbados Advocate, Chief Fire Officer Chesterfield Mayers stated that the Fire Service received a call about the fire at 12:12 p.m. that initially prompted a response by two fire tenders from the St. John and headquarters stations. A third tender was called to duty from the Arch Hall Fire Station. The Fire Chief and 17 fire officers were on the scene and the fire was brought under control in approximately one hour.

Up to press time there was no word on the cause of the blaze, but CFO Mayers commented that the fire was possibly started accidentally.

Grantley Adams School principal, John Mascoll, stated that the building referred to as "The Barn" by members of the educational institution was used by the school's artisan to repair furniture and was also used to store miscellaneous materials. The principal added that nothing to critical to the school's business was stored in the building and that classes will continue as normal on Monday.
