Fire danger averted
19 March 2006
Serious danger was averted yesterday when firemen responded promptly and were able to contain a fire at a storeroom at the Grantley Adams Memorial Secondary School, St Joseph.

Receiving the call just after midday, three fire tenders and 15 officers from the Probyn Street, St John and Arch Hall stations responded to the blaze under Chief Fire Officer Chesterfield Mayers.

Principal John Mascoll said the fire was confined to the building know as "the barn" which housed the artisan's quarters where repairs were done on the school's furniture.

Mascoll said nothing was saved from the inferno and that tools, furniture and some mahogany made up the losses.

He said the fire would not affect the school's functioning and that classes would proceed as normal on Monday, "What we have here is just an unfortunate accident, nothing major." (RC)
