Brave-hearted girl honoured
17 June 2006
Brave-hearted girl honoured. A then four-year-old girl who rescued her baby sister and brother during a house fire last year, has been recognised for her bravery.

Chief Fire Officer Chesterfield Mayers presented Ashne Marshall, now five, of Cave Hill, St Michael, with a plaque during a special ceremony at the Barbados Fire Service's headquarters in Probyn Street, the City. She also received a gift certificate from Cave Shepherd.

On February 27, 2005, after Ashne's mother left home to attend to a domestic matter, fire broke out in their timber house. When Ashne realised the house was on fire, she grabbed her then six-month-old baby sister, Ryana, and then two-year-old brother, Raul, and took them to safety.

The fire chief applauded Ashne for her bravery, but also warned people, especially children, that they should not take fire lightly and must not attempt to re-enter burning buildings "because they may not have the good fortune of Ashne and her siblings". Ashne, who is quite shy, is a student of St Matthias Primary School. She said she felt "good" to be honoured. (DG)
