Fire guts two houses

Broken furniture, shattered glass, and a family torn apart.

And if that was not bad enough, Sharon Inniss had to tell her three-year-old son, Shamara, the sad news that the five-bedroom house went up in smoke yesterday.

Sharon's house was one of two that was ravaged by fire in Bayfield, St Philip, yesterday afternoon. A nearby shop was also damaged in the blaze.

The other family left homeless was Sharon's neighbour and brother Roger Inniss whose three-bedroom house was flattened. Both houses were insured.

Sharon said she was at Global Overseas Limited performing her duty as an assistant administrator when she received a call saying a house in the neighbourhood was burning.

"I thought that my nephew was joking. I just got up and left work right away," she said, trying to fight back tears. She said her mother had died two years ago, and now she was being forced to deal with another blow.

She said the family would be staying with relatives and friends until they found permanent accommodation.

Roger, who is employed at Marshall Trading, expressed much appreciation to the dozens who gathered at the scene and helped to save some of the furniture and other possessions.

Democratic Labour Party treasurer Donville Inniss, a relative of the family, was also at the scene and promised to help them. (DG)
