The Barbados Fire Service (BFS) responded to one fire call during the Tropical Storm on Wednesday.
Fire Chief Chesterfield Mayers told the Barbados Advocate yesterday that there was a power surge which caused some houses to lose their electrical equipment.
Mayers said that television sets and refrigerators among other equipment were damaged at about six houses in Rock Hall, St. Peter around 1 p.m.
He also noted that one appliance responded to the call that an electrical pole was burning, but the investigation revealed that the power surge had caused a short circuit in the system which resulted in the damages.
However, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs Mia Mottley thanked all Barbadians for responding to the Tropical Storm Warning on Wednesday and is calling on Barbadians to give God thanks for sparing this island once again from Hurricane Emily.
Mottley said, "Within an hour and a half of the 'All Clear', I received a call that Emily had become a Category 2 hurricane and is on its way to Grenada. This is the same thing that happened last year with Hurricane Ivan.
According to Mottley, "I trust and hope that we would not have to face a hurricane in the future, but you cannot predict how the system moves, because they are beyond the ability of man to do so".
She also indicated that it is not the intention of the Government to for any citizen to be disadvantaged in taking care of his or her circumtances, where there is ample oppurtunity for a warning.
Reiterating that Barbadians should continue to give thanks, Mottley added that it must be recognised that in life, "you really ought to be prepared for any eventuality". |
