Member of the National Scout Committee of the Boy's Scout Association Davidson Williams is making a call for discipline not be compromised.
He was speaking during the opening ceremony for this year's four-week junior fire cadet programme at Fire Service Probyn Street headquarters this week.
Williams told the audience which included Chief Fire Officer Chesterfield Mayers, his deputy Anthony Blackman, junior fire cadets, fire officers and others that one of the biggest problems which society faced was a lack of discipline.
He urged the junior fire cadets to be mindful that the Boys Scouts and the Girl Guides were two disciplined organisations.
His colleague Chief Guide Commissioner Wilma Turton said too many people were quick to label the youth as lawless and not having good values.
By the same token, some adults were also guilty of not taking a step backwards to point the youth in the right direction.
Turton reminded the youngsters that they had a responsibility not only to the organisation but to themselves and to their peers.
She also urged the students to be prepared to share their knowledge and experience which they have gained.
Turton also made a suggestion that the programme be expanded to the point where it could be used as the "nursery for future recruits for the fire service".
Programme co-ordinator fire officer Marlon Small who gave an overview of the programme said the junior fire cadet programme for the last five years sought to give the youth an education in a unique profession - which rendered humanitarian services saved lives and protect property from destruction. |
