Family Of Ten Loses All In Fire
11 August 2005
A family of ten were left homeless after their house and all its conents were destroyed by fire last Sunday afternoon.

Lloyd and Diana John lost their three-bedroom, one-bathroom wooden house in Clapham Heights, St Michael, and this has left the family living at two separate locations for the time being.

Firemen said, however, they could not yet confirm the cause of the fire since investigations were still being carried out.

Lloyd told the DAILY NATION the family had lost everything they owned.

The mason, who owned the uninsured house, said only the living room remained.

He explained that his family went to church on Sunday morning leaving three of his children home with his mother-in-law, who was visiting the island, along with two others from St Vincent.

Lloyd recalled that after church he went to the airport to collect a friend, when his neighbour called to say that the house was on fire. "I did not believe him at first since we are always making sport with each other. Then his father came on the phone and told me to get home quick that the house was on fire," he recounted.

On reaching home, the house was destroyed and Barbados Fire Service tenders were packing up to leave.

Lloyd said his wife, children and in-laws were now staying at a house in Barbarees Hill, St Michael, while he stayed in what was left of his burnt-out house. He said the Welfare Department indicated it would assist in getting clothing for the children and would look after getting school uniforms for them for the new school year which begins next month.

"At this point in time, I don't know what to do," a distressed Lloyd cried.
