Fire claimed the house of one St. George resident last night. Barbados' most recent fire victim is 94-year-old James 'Ernest' Alleyne of Valley Ridge, St. George. The senior citizen's two-bedroom wooden home was completely destroyed along with all possessions.
Officials on the scene estimated the fire to have started at approximately 7:15 p.m. The elderly man suffered minor burns to his hands and received early treatment on the scene.
Two fire-tenders, one from the St. John fire station and one from Probyn Street headquarters responded to the blaze. One ambulance also attended.
Senior fire officer at the scene, Acting Divisional Officer Junior Boyce, called fires that involve elderly persons living alone a major source of concern for the Fire Service.
