Fire Prevention & Safety Education
For many years the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) has been directing its efforts at reducing known fire hazards and preventing dangerous conditions. It continues to educate citizens to recognise potential hazards and take appropriate corrective action. The Fire Service educates the public in the following ways:
- Provides free fire prevention and safety literature
- Develops and conducts fire prevention and safety training
- Frequently conducts public fire safety lectures and demonstrations
- Collaborates with the press in the publication of fire safety features
- The Department participates in exhibitions and conducts community visits.
- Develops television programmes with the assistance of the Barbados Government Information Service.
Fire Inspection & Code Compliance
Another important fire prevention activity is the fire safety inspection. Fire inspections are usually conducted by senior officers (Gazetted ranks) who are specially trained in these procedures. The inspection process serves, not only to make fire officers aware of potential hazards, but also permits inspection personnel to communicate unsafe conditions to building occupants and owners. By conducting fire inspections the Fire Service ensures that manufacturing companies, commercial entities and residential occupancies maintain compliance with national codes and safety standards.
