Gas - LPG Cylinder Safety...

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is perfectly safe provided the relevant precautions and instructions are adhered to. The following information is presented for the safety of persons using LPG cylinders.

Fire Safety Tips

  • NEVER store cylinders in cupboards, place in well ventilated areas. This prevents the build up of vapours.
  • ALWAYS ensure that cylinder connections are secure BEFORE turning on the gas.
  • ALWAYS use a solution of soapy water When checking for leaks, turning on the gas cylinder momentarily. If bubbles occur, there is a leak.
  • NEVER store spare cylinders near heat sources or open flames.
  • ALWAYS use, store and transport cylinders in the upright position (vertical).
  • ALWAYS ensure that burner knobs are in the "off" position when replacing empty cylinders. Eliminate all sources of ignition (i.e. Do not smoke or operate electrical switches).
  • DO NOT strike matches, smoke, operate electrical switches or appliances if the odour of leaking gas is detected. Extinguish all open flames immediately and ventilate the area.
  • ALWAYS ensure that gas is turned "off" at the cylinder if severe weather is expected or if you are going to be out for an extended period of time.
  • ALWAYS have a lighted match or other means of ignition ready BEFORE turning on the gas.
  • ALWAYS have the regulator hose between the gas cylinder and appliance inspected periodically for defects. Immediately replace hose if cracks or breaks are detected. "Be Fire Smart."

Transporting LPG Cylinders

When transporting LPG cylinders it is important to follow these basic procedures:
  • Close the valve tightly, even if the cylinder is empty.
  • Cylinders SHOULD always be transported in the upright position.
  • Cylinders SHOULD NOT be transported in the trunk. Place the cylinder on the floor, make sure vehicle windows are rolled down for ventilation.
  • ALWAYS ensure the cylinder is fastened securely to prevent roll or shifting.
