Fire Extinguishers...

Fire Extinguishers Save Lives

When used correctly, a portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the Fire Service arrives. Portable fire extinguishers, however, are not designed to fight large or spreading fires. Even against small fires, they are useful only under certain conditions.

  • The operator must know how to properly use the extinguisher.
  • The extinguisher must be in working order and fully charged.
  • The extinguisher must match the type of fire being fought.
  • The extinguisher must be large enough to put the fire out.

How To Use A Fire Extinguisher

  • Remember: P A S S -- Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep
  • Stand eight feet away from the fire. Follow the PASS procedure.
  • PULL - The pin, this releases the operating lever and allows you to discharge the extinguisher. Some extinguishers may have other release mechanisms.
  • AIM - Point the extinguisher nozzle (or hose) at the base of the fire.
  • SQUEEZE - The lever about the handle, this discharges the extinguishing agent. Releasing the lever will stop the discharge.
  • SWEEP - From side to side, moving carefully toward the fire, keep the extinguisher aimed at the base of the fire and sweep until the flames appear to be out.

Fire Scene Safety Tips

ALWAYS watch the fire site. If the fire reignites, repeat the process. Never turn your back on the fire site and walk away. Always face the fire site and back away in the event that the fire reignites.

ALWAYS be sure to have the Fire Service visit and inspect the fire site, even if you think you've safely extinguished the fire.
