Electrical Fire Safety...

This page provides basic preventive measures to assist you when using electrical appliances and electricity. Don't underestimate the fire risk from electricity.

Fire Safety Tips

  • ALWAYS ensure when using tools and appliances externally, that you use only extension cords labeled for outdoor use.
  • ALWAYS turn off and unplug electrical appliances when they are not being used.
  • ALWAYS use a qualified electrician to repair or service electrical appliances.
  • ALWAYS keep electrical appliances clean and in good working order, and have them serviced regularly.
  • ALWAYS check electrical cords and plugs for wear and tear. Immediately replace frayed cords.
  • ALWAYS keep energized electrical cords and appliances away from water.
  • ALWAYS use a surge protector when connecting electronic equipment and appliances such as computers, televisions and stereos.
  • NEVER use tape to mend or join broken electrical cords. It is best to replace the entire cord.
  • NEVER use water to extinguish fires involving energized electrical equipment.
  • NEVER remove or bypass the ground pin on a three-prong plug.
  • NEVER place extension cords across doorways or under rugs or carpeting.
  • NEVER disconnect an extension cord by pulling the cord. Always hold the plug to remove it from the outlet.
  • NEVER overload electrical circuits.

Following these safety tips will help to protect you and your family. However, we urge you to consult an electrical professional should you require more detailed information.
