Candle Safety...

The increased popularity of scented candles has prompted the Barbados Fire Service to issue the following fire safety tips. These tips should help to protect you and your family and minimise the risks when using candles.

Fire Prevention Tips

  • ALWAYS place candles out of the reach of children. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children or pets.
  • ALWAYS ensure that candleholders are placed on sturdy, stable, uncluttered, and heat-resistant surfaces.
  • ALWAYS keep candles away from natural and artificial Christmas trees and holiday decorations.
  • ALWAYS burn candles in a candleholder. Ensure candles are never placed under a shelf or other surface.
  • NEVER place lighted candles near windows or doorways where drafts (air currents) could bring combustibles in contact with the flame.
  • NEVER place lighted candles near curtains, furniture, carpets, beds or near other combustible or flammable material.
  • NEVER leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • NEVER use candles to provide lighting during a power outage or adverse weather. Flashlights and battery-powered lanterns are much safer.

Most residential candle fires reportedly occurred because candles were unattended or accidentally knocked over. In many cases, fire safety precautions were not followed. The Barbados Fire Service urges you to use candles carefully and follow all fire safety precautions.
