Fire Service Training
For many years, fire service training was conducted mostly in-house and based mainly on the fundamentals of fire fighting, namely, hose and hydrant drills, ladder drills, pump drills, etcetera. Training has now taken new dimensions and is conducted through several academies and professional agencies under a number of subject headings.
In-service Training
Training is the key to fire department's efficiency, and the development of fire officers is recognised as integral to the overall development process of the organisation. In-service training in the Barbados Fire Service is primarily the responsibility of the Training Officer, even though specific individuals may be assigned the responsibility of planning and coordinating some training programmes.
Training Opportunities
Firefighter training is conducted in accordance with various local, regional and international standards. Basic training involves the initial three month training that fire officers receive when entering the Fire Service. However, fire officers are exposed to other intermediate and advanced training programmes. These programmes assist personnel in the following ways:
- Assist in the maintenance of competence
- Develop knowledge skills and experience
- Allow personnel to maximise their potential
- Assist management in identifying development needs
- Equip individuals who aspire to reach the next level in their career path.
