| Career Information...
The Barbados Fire Service offers an exciting
and satisfying career. Like other Public
Service organisations, the Fire Service draws
its members from the local community. All
new entrants will receive the same basic
training required to start a career as a Fire Officer, despite educational or
academic achievements.
A Fire Service Career
A career in the Fire Service is one with
many possibilities. The profession is not
limited to extinguishing fires, but also extends
to other responsibilities as well, namely,
public education, fire safety training, inspections
& licensing, rescue & extrication,
and other non emergency special services.
To be a Fire Officer requires a range of
personal skills, namely, reliability, flexibility
the ability to work in a team and the ability
to make a quick assessment of a situation. Training is critical
to the day-to-day work of a Fire
Officer. After the three month basic
training programme, a person will receive on-the-job
training as part of his operational duties.
Fire fighting is not a job which can be taken lightly, it
is dangerous, but can provide a sense of
real achievement and value. There is also
plenty of scope for individual potential
to be realised and a career path to be developed.
The Fire Service conducts continuous in-service
training programmes to ensure the fire officer's potential
is maximised and he is kept up-to-date with the latest fire fighting and specialist
techniques. [ Read more ]
